What is Learned Helplessness?

Learned helplessness is a psychological condition characterized by persistent feelings of defeat, hopelessness, and diminished motivation.

The condition was first identified by psychologists Martin Seligman and Steven Maier in the 1960s through a series of experiments. Seligman and Maier found that when dogs were repeatedly exposed to uncontrollable stressors (in the form of electric shocks), they eventually stopped trying to escape—even when escape later became possible and easy. The dogs appeared to adopt a state of passive acceptance while still clearly experiencing emotional distress.

Subsequent studies on humans confirmed that people exposed to repeated failure or uncontrollable adversity also developed learned helplessness, showing similar behavioral passivity and emotional distress.

While learned helplessness can deeply affect motivation and resilience, it is not a permanent state. Change is possible, using strategies that help individuals shift their mindset, build confidence, and take meaningful action.

In this article, we’ll explore how people suffering from learned helplessness can find empowerment through coaching: regaining control, rebuilding self-efficacy, and taking action—via techniques like cognitive reframing, goal-setting, and accountability.

Is Learned Helplessness a Mental Health Condition?

While learned helplessness is not classified as a formal mental health disorder (meaning it cannot be diagnosed as a standalone condition), it frequently coexists with or exacerbates other mental health conditions.
Research has established strong associations between learned helplessness and depression, anxiety, phobias, and social withdrawal. It can contribute to chronic stress, career stagnation, relationship struggles, and overall disengagement from life.

Without intervention, learned helplessness can:

  • Reinforce patterns of avoidance and hopelessness, increasing vulnerability to conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD
  • Create issues with managing and changing behaviors, including addiction and substance abuse
  • Result in deep-seated dissatisfaction in life and hopelessness

While we all have tough periods, to live with learned helplessness is to be persistently undermined by a sense of defeat and futility, where every perceived failure reinforces feelings of powerlessness and lowers motivation.

10 Symptoms of Learned Helplessness

Recognizing the signs of learned helplessness is the first step toward breaking free from its grip.

Over time, researchers have found that learned helplessness isn’t just about giving up—it also affects motivation, confidence, and how we handle challenges. It can make people feel stuck, doubt their abilities, and struggle to see a way forward. The list below highlights some of the key signs of learned helplessness, showing how it can impact both mental well-being and daily life.

  1. Diminished Motivation – A persistent lack of effort or initiative due to repeated failures, leading to the belief that actions have no impact on outcomes.
  2. Passive Resignation – An acceptance of negative circumstances as unchangeable, resulting in inaction even when solutions are available.
  3. Persistent Self-Doubt – A deeply ingrained belief in one’s own inadequacy, leading to hesitation and reluctance to seize opportunities.
  4. Avoidance Behavior – A tendency to withdraw from challenges or new experiences to minimize the risk of failure.
  5. Emotional Detachment – A sense of disconnection from personal goals, relationships, or activities that once provided fulfillment.
  6. Chronic Stress and Anxiety – Continuous psychological distress stemming from a perceived lack of control over one’s circumstances.
  7. Negative Internal Dialogue – Recurrent thoughts of self-defeat, such as “I can’t,” “Why try?” or “Nothing will ever change.”
  8. Reduced Initiative – A reluctance to take action, even when opportunities for improvement are present.
  9. Depressive Outlook and Hopelessness – A pervasive sense of despair, where the future appears bleak and devoid of meaningful possibilities.
  10. Impaired Problem-Solving Ability – A difficulty in identifying or implementing solutions, often defaulting to the assumption that obstacles are insurmountable.

Learned Helplessness in the Workplace

Needless to say, people with learned helplessness face tremendous challenges in their professional life which can have devastating consequences.

Sufferers often lack confidence and the belief that their actions can effect positive change. This decreased motivation can lead to procrastination, decision avoidance, reduced problem-solving abilities, and even burnout.

Coaching has been found to be a powerful and effective means for empowering professionals to overcome learned helplessness. Using methods such as cognitive reframing, goal-setting, and structured accountability, people with learned helplessness can reclaim self-efficacy and find agency to actively shape their future with renewed optimism and purpose.

How Coaching Can Help Overcome Learned Helplessness

Coaching interventions help sufferers from learned helplessness to modify their thoughts and actions, replacing negative self-beliefs with an action-oriented mindset.

A sense of control can be regained by identifying strengths, setting achievable goals, and taking small, meaningful steps forward using a combination of the following strategies:

Cognitive Reframing

One of the most powerful tools coaches use is cognitive reframing—helping clients shift their perspective on challenges and setbacks. Instead of seeing failure as proof of their limitations, coaching encourages individuals to view obstacles as learning opportunities. This mindset shift allows people to let go of self-defeating thoughts and replace them with more constructive, empowering beliefs.

Growth Mindset Development

Coaching helps individuals move from a fixed mindset—where they believe their abilities are static—to a growth mindset, where they see their skills and intelligence as things that can be developed with effort. By fostering a mindset of continuous learning, coaching allows clients to embrace challenges, take risks, and understand that setbacks are just stepping stones to progress.

Goal Setting & Small Wins

Coaches helps coachees break things down from big, overwhelming goals into manageable steps. By setting small, achievable wins, individuals build momentum and regain confidence in their ability to make changes and stay motivated

Accountability & Feedback

When people struggle with learned helplessness, they often feel isolated in their challenges. Coaching provides consistent accountability and supportive feedback, helping coachees stay on track with their goals. Having someone to check in with regularly can make all the difference in pushing forward even when self-doubt creeps in.

Behavioral Activation

For many sufferers, the hardest part of breaking free from learned helplessness can be simply taking action. Coaching helps clients get unstuck by encouraging them to take small, intentional steps that lead to bigger changes. By focusing on taking action—even when motivation is low—clients regain a sense of control over their lives and start to understand and believe in their ability to influence outcomes.
